Company Profile

Company Overview

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) is a trade association comprised of a diverse group of manufacturers, distributors, retailers, installers in the specialty automotive equipment industry. The organization produces award-winning trade shows, publications, educational programs, government affairs advocacy, and industry-focused research reports. The SEMA Show, which takes place annually in Las Vegas, is the premiere automotive specialty products trade event in the world.

Company History

It all began in 1963, with a group representing 13 speed equipment manufacturers who got together to organize the Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association, or SEMA.

SEMA was born as a result of an industry that was destined to change motorsports in America, and it actually started with the activities on the dry lakebeds of California's Mojave Desert.

It was in the 1930's that enthusiasts-not yet named hot rodders-tested their homemade products designed to improve the performance of their vehicles; an increase in top speed was the primary goal.

In 1968, governmental regulation became a serious issue, prompting the officers to change the name from "speed" to "specialty" for a better image. It was in 1970 that the name of the association was changed to Specialty Equipment Market Association, to more appropriately describe the mix of companies involved and their activities, embracing distribution and retailing.

The first SEMA Show was held under the grandstands of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, awaiting the completion of the Anaheim Convention Center, where the exposition was moved in 1968.

Today the SEMA Show is held in Las Vegas, and is the world's leading automotive aftermarket trade show bringing exhibitors and attendees from around the world.
