Company History
BACKGROUND ABOUT THE CPUC
The CPUC, headquartered in San Francisco, has broad powers to regulate safety, standards of service, and more than $50 billion in rates paid annually to over 650 privately-owned and operated natural gas, electric, telephone, water, sewer, steam and pipeline utilities, as well as truck, bus, railroad, rapid rail transit, light rail transit, ferry, limousine, shuttle, and other transportation companies in California.
The electric, telecommunications, and energy industries are undergoing significant changes in California and across the country, leading to industry restructuring and changes in the methods of regulation. The CPUC’s mission anticipates economic, policy, and legal impacts within a regulatory framework to promote economic growth and to protect consumers from unreasonable and unscrupulous activities.
